Artist's Comments

This is a fairly poor shot of the lagoon Nebula. However even though it is scientifically bad, the colors are very nice, and make for an interesting photo

ready for the long story on how to do it?

I was using a cheap Orion 120ST telescope on their cheap bargain Equatorial mount. I drove about 75 miles out of the city and asked some farmers if it would be okay to set up somewhere on their farm, and they didn't mind at all, in fact they pointed me to a nice concrete slab that when the sun went down should be out of any ground lights. It was perfect... I set up, cracked open a beer relaxed in my folding super comfy chair with built in ottoman and watched the sunset. It takes about an hour after the sun goes down for it to be completely dark... once there, I hooked the camera up to the telescope, so it was equivalent to an f/4 960mm lens at that point. Now I can't see anything through the camera when it's coupled except the brightest stars and planets, so I pointed at jupiter to get a focus test. Once jupiter was a tiny sharp ball with a few stripes, I locked the focuser, then pointed in the general vicinity of where the lagoon nebula should be. using a remote trigger, taking 20 second exposures to find it, I did find it, then framed it the way I thought would be prettiest, then started the real shots, I took photos from 10 seconds to 400 seconds, but right around 40 worked best. This would be nearly impossible to do without a digital camera, the instant photo review is the only way to know if you're getting anything at all. I packed up the stuff and went home to see what it looks like on a bigger screen.. out of the 50+ photos this was the best one of that subject material.

Something you'd wanna try?
